The PECAN Approach

The PECAN Approach

I have developed these key areas to work on in order to build a medical practice that runs like a business.

This means that it will deliver a consistently excellent service to patients based on systems and processes rather than people.

Hi, I am JJ Staiano, a Consultant Plastic Surgeon. I left the NHS in 2012 and set up my own Private Clinic in 2013 and I set up STAIANO Consulting in 2017

I have learned a lot since ‘going it alone’ both in terms of treating my practice more like a business and also from a mindset point of view in terms of time management, fighting procrastination and setting and working towards clearly defined goals.

I have found that working on the business of my private practice was completely different to working in the business of delivering clinical care to my patients.

I think that most doctors in private practice do very little to build a healthy and sustainable business and subsequently give a poor service to their patients.

I have developed the The Club to share ideas and thoughts and to bring structure and accountability into developing the business of your private practice.

This is not about increasing revenue or profits, it is about delivering a better service to your patients and having a more predictable and sustainable Private Practice that you can control and ultimately hold as an asset which has value rather than a liability that you need to worry about when you retire.

Lessons Learned From Running A Clinic

I set up my clinic in 2013 and since then have had ups and downs and learned a lot.

I have learned that you cannot rely on the Private Hospitals to bring you patients.

I have learned that everyone wants to pay as little as possible and gain as much as possible and this includes the insurance companies.

I have learned that nothing is guaranteed but you will always be able to make money if there is enough will.

I no longer rely on the private hospitals at all and all of my enquiries are generated through my own channels.

I do not do any insured work and I have other plastic surgeons working with me at my clinic which allows me to control the amount of time I spend on clinical care.

I am happy to share these lessons in The Club.
